Mural Design Updates

MuralsDC and Department of Public Works representatives have been meeting with community members and property owners over the course of the last two weeks to work together with artists on finalizing this year’s mural designs. A few highlights from some of the meetings are below:

4400 Iowa Ave., NW

This year, MuralsDC will feature a mural promoting language access. Proposals for the mural, to be located at McFarland Middle School and painted by Juan Pineda, used abstraction to encourage different people coming together to find meaning.

710 7th St., NW

This area was the tragic site of a fatal shooting of neighborhood teenager Airrion Ali Johnson, five years ago. Thurayyah Rahman, who led the effort for the mural, wanted a design that called for peace in the areaas yet another tragic shooting has occurred this summer.

Artist Coby Kennedy presented two designs, including one that incorporated his signature Hummingbird image that Thurayyah favored.
